Introduction
In the fast-evolving world of artificial intelligence, its applications in legal and contract management are revolutionizing traditional workflows. To explore this cutting-edge intersection, we spoke with Alex Zilberman, Co-Founder and CEO of Chamelio AI, a platform transforming the way in-house legal handle contract negotiations workflows. In this Q&A, Alex shares insights on how AI is reshaping contract management, key industry trends, and what the future holds for this technology.
What inspired you to delve into AI-driven contract management, and how has your journey shaped the development of your platform?
We are three co-founders: Myself, Alex Zilberman, CEO ; Gil Banyas, COO and ex-General Counsel for the last 10 years; and Gal Lellouch, CTO and AI expert in document intelligence, whose last role was Senior Director of AI at Sage.
When we first witnessed the “Big Bang” of GPT-3.5’s release in November 2022, it was clear to us that the world had just changed. It immediately sparked our imagination, and we started experimenting with it in the legal context. In my previous roles as COO and VP of Partnerships, I had a very close relationship with commercial contracts and getting them signed. Gil, whom I met at the previous company I helped build, was the General Counsel. We looked at each other with an almost instant understanding that what typically takes hours and days could now be done much smarter, safer, and quicker.
Together with Gal, we started tinkering with the technology for a year before deciding it was time to take it to the next level and put our prototype to the test. The initial response from our first customers was what kept us going.
How do AI tools enhance the efficiency of reviewing contracts compared to traditional methods?
There are various AI tools available, but what sets our approach apart is how we utilize them to capture the essence of legal concepts. Unlike traditional tools that require defining everything within a strict template, often making the negotiation process rigid and irrelevant for 50% of cases, our solution offers a more flexible approach. We enable you to use your own templates without the need to hard-code them into a system, which is a significant game-changer.
What are the most common pain points businesses face during contract management, and how can AI solve them?
The number one priority for businesses is to get contracts signed quickly. To achieve this without increasing risk to your business, you need to find a way to incorporate acceptable business and legal risk levels in a timely manner. Our AI system can optimize for minimal changes in the contract (to accelerate the overall negotiation time) while providing the reviewer with all the necessary information to make decisions on where to compromise and where to stand firm, along with appropriate language for each scenario.
How does your platform address concerns about the accuracy and reliability of AI in interpreting complex legal language?
Great question. In our case, it all goes back to our unique approach. Unlike other solutions out there, we don’t rely on the LLM to provide us with the solution. Instead, we use the customer’s template as a baseline, which minimizes reliability issues to almost zero.
The second thing we do is provide a transparent way to see and control our suggestions. This allows the user to understand what led to each suggestion, and they can easily accept all or part of it as they see fit.
What steps should businesses take to successfully integrate AI tools into their existing legal or administrative workflows?
Our north star is minimal to no IT involvement in the integration phase. Unlike other solutions, ours can address the biggest pain points without requiring changes to your current workflows. We offer a Word add-in that you can download from the Microsoft Store. It takes just 5 minutes to build your own personal first playbook, and you can get started immediately.
Contracts often involve sensitive data. What key measures should businesses look for in an AI solution to ensure data security and compliance?
You should choose a vendor that understands the nature of sensitive information. Look for reputable vendors that have the right standards certifications, such as SOC II, and more importantly, the right mindset as a company. Our founding team all comes from backgrounds working for either public companies or highly regulated industries.
What trends in AI and machine learning are you most excited about that could further improve contract analysis in the next few years?
I see multi-modal technology improving quite nicely. While OCR is already a robust technology, there’s still room for improvement, and I think multi-modal models will help even more with legacy documents. There are many other exciting applications in the legal field outside of contract analysis, and I’m enthusiastic about those as well. We’ll have more to share on this in the near future.
How do you see AI transforming industries beyond legal services, particularly in tasks requiring detailed text analysis?
The future will be very exciting. Some areas where I’m looking for disruption include personal finances – AI that can read and highlight important information for me by knowing me personally. We’ll likely see AI handling phone calls to different service providers (probably AI-to-AI interactions). Education will undoubtedly change; I have two young children, so I’m excited to experience this with them as well. I’d say that most likely, there will be AI applications in almost everything and anything.
What skills or mindsets should professionals develop to work effectively alongside AI-powered tools?
Critical thinking is essential. It’s very easy to be misled by the “strong conviction” that AI systems output. Additionally, professionals need to be able to understand data flow, how to influence it, and what factors make a difference in the results they’re seeing.
If you could give one piece of advice to organizations hesitant about adopting AI for contract review, what would it be?
Start small by adopting one solution for a specific problem. This approach will make it easier to measure the implementation effort and its impact. Choose a vendor or technology that allows you to do this with minimal to no disruption to your current work processes.
Conclusion
The integration of AI into contract management is no longer a futuristic concept—it’s a present-day reality transforming how businesses handle legal workflows. As Alex Zilberman highlighted, AI-powered tools like Chamelio AI are addressing long-standing pain points, from speeding up contract negotiations to ensuring accuracy and security. By leveraging AI, organizations can streamline processes, reduce risks, and make more informed decisions without overhauling existing systems.
